Dunaliella salina - Overview

Image
Dunaliella salina Dunaliella salina is a unicellular microalgae belong to division Chlorophyta . It is found in salinity environments such as salted brines, salt evaporation ponds, and hypersaline lakes  .It is able to tolerate varying NaCl concentrations, ranging from 0.2% to approximately 35% . Thus, Dunaliella salina is a hyper-halotolerant organism found in high densities in saline lakes.  The ability to tolerate high salt concentrations is advantageous, since competition is minimal in high salt concentration areas.  How D.salina   tolerate high salt concentration? D. salina has adapted to survive in high salinity environments by accumulating glycerol to balance osmotic pressure. Note :  D. salina is also adapted to solar radiation using β-carotene to protect against ionizing energy.                 Red Colour of Salt Brines  Dunaliella salina...

Genetics Basic terminology(part 1)

Pure line :  Individual which is homozygous for all traits.
Inbreeding: Mating between relatives/mating between individuals have same genotype..
Selfing  Self fertilization possible only in bisexual.
Cross: Cross hybridisation between 2 individuals.
Gene/Factor : part of DNA which control  a particular character. 1gene=1 enzyme
Gene Locus:  A specific region of a chromosome which represent a single  gene is called gene locus.
Alleles: Copy of 1 gene is called alleles.
Dominant and Recessive Allele:
Trait which expressed /appears in homozygous as well as heterozygous condition is called domiannt. It may be pure or not.For example:TT or Tt .Here,T is dominant gene.
Trait which expressed itself only in homozygous condition is called recessive. For example:tt.Here,t express itself only in homozygous form.Always give purw breed.
Wild Allele: An original allele which is dominant and widely spread in population.
Mutant Allele:  Recessive amd not widely distributed.
Character and Trait:
A feature of an individual called character. For example-height(a feature) is a character.While,Alternate/Contrasting/Detect-able forms of a feature is called trait. For example-tallness and dwarfness.
Genotype and Phenotype:
physical appearance of an individual with respect to a trait is called phenotype.example Tallness
Genetic constitution of an individual with respect to a particular trait called genotype.
TT(homozygous tall)Tt(heterozygous tall).
Genome:  Genetic material of a single individual is called genome.
Gene pool:   Genetic material of a population is called gene pool.
Homozygous and Heterozygous:
When 2 similar type of alleles present together, then individual is called homozygous. It give pure breed. For example:TT or tt
When 2 dissimilar type of alleles present together , then individual is calles  heterozygous. It give impure breed. For example:Tt
Hemizygous When an individual possess two different type of chromosomes in a pair of sex chromosomes. For example:Human male( Xy)
